Overview

Speedball is a game played with two 5 player teams (max roster of 10), each of which attempt to advance a soccer ball down a field to score at a goal line. Players kick the ball -- as in soccer, throw and catch the ball -- as in basketball, and punt and pass -- as in football. Football rules generally apply for passing the ball and scoring; basketball rules apply to fly or aerial balls; and soccer rules mostly apply when the ball is kicked on the ground.

General Rules:
  • 1 official per game
  • Each game is 3 periods
    • 12 minutes each period
  • Each team is allowed 3 time outs to be used at any point during the game
  • Field Size: 60 yards total
    • 50 yard field
    • 2 – 5 yard end zones
  • Substitutions may occur during any ball stoppage.
    • Time outs, scoring, out of bounds plays, fouls, etc.
  • The game starts by having a jump ball in the center of the field, the players are allowed to move anywhere on the field of game play.
  • The field players are permitted to touch the ball with any part of their body at any time EXCEPT their arms/hands (see next rule for details).
  • Players may use their arms/hands as long as the last thing the ball touches is not the ground; one may not pick up the ball from the ground. A player may use their feet to get the ball in the air to carry it around.
  • A rolling, bouncing or stationary ball is considered a ground ball. A ground ball cannot be touched with the hands or arms, but has to be kicked or bounced off of a player’s body.
  • When the ball goes airborne via a kick, it becomes a fly ball. A fly ball can be caught and then passed, punted, held or drop-kicked. It also can be played as an overhead dribble. That means the player can throw the ball and run to catch it before it hits the ground.
  • Once a player has a ball in their possession, they can pass it off, attempt to score, or drop the ball in order to utilize other parts of the body to move the ball.
  • Goalies must stay on their side of the court and can't cross the half line.
  • Goalies can touch the ball with any part of their body, meaning that they can pick up the ball off the ground without it being considered an "illegal" move. It is still illegal for goalies to travel with the ball in their hands; however they can dribble the ball (soccer style)
  • If the ball goes outside and is no longer in bounds the last player to touch it must give the ball to the other team. The team receiving the ball can throw it in like a throw-in for basketball.
  • The speedball goal is 6 feet wide and 4 feet tall.
  • The penalty area is 5 yards in front of each goal and end line.
Penalties and Fouls:
A penalty is when a foul is committed inside the goal box and the other team gets to take a penalty kick.
A foul, committed anywhere except in the box, results in a free kick or throw at the goal for the player fouled. Player must declare whether they are kicking or throwing.
  • Fouls in speedball include traveling, handling a ground ball with the hands, drop-kicking in an attempt to make a goal or making a forward pass in an attempt to make a touchdown while inside the 5-yard penalty area. Other fouls include having the ball for more than five seconds during a free kick or more than 10 seconds on a penalty kick.
  • When an attacking player commits a foul behind his opponent’s goal line, the opposing team gains a free throw or kick on the goal. If the foul is incurred outside the penalty area, the free kick or throw is awarded at the location where the foul was committed.
  • Handball — if a player touches the ball with his/her hands after it touches the ground
  • Traveling — when a player takes steps after coming to a complete stop while the ball is in the player's hands
  • Unsportsmanlike Conduct — viciously assaulting another player with no intention of going after the ball. This includes, but is not limited to; pushing, tripping, charging, blocking, and unnecessary roughness
    • A player, who commits an unsportsmanlike conduct foul, receives a flag. The player receiving the card must sit out for five minutes. Two flags for a single player results in player being removed from the rest of the game. The player who committed the foul will not be replaced during either situation
  • Goalies Passing The Half Line — when a goalie moves over the half line
  • If the player has the ball in his/her hands, they must make every effort to stop moving as fast as possible (if one keeps moving it is considered a travel and the ball will be turned over to the other team).
Scoring:
  • A soccer goal gains three points and occurs when a ground ball is kicked into a team’s goal.
  • A handball goal gains two points. It occurs when the ball is thrown into a team’s goal
  • A touchdown gains one point and occurs when the ball is passed to a player who is behind the goal line
